Advice needed from mothers of young ones

As my children have grown older, their interests have gone from power rangers and barney to IPods, cell phones, and xbox…I am mostly ok with that. But I think I am losing my connection to what little kids like.

My dearest friend, Christine, is having her son’s 6th birthday party this Saturday. Billy is a great kid and very much a part of you family. Since he and his sister were born (Ana is 4), all of their gifts from me have been handmade (don’t conjure up images of Ralphie and Aunt Clara’s gift, I am MUCH cooler than that).

So Billy’s party is less than a week away and I spent today crocheting this:

I was pretty impressed with myself considering it took less than 4 full hours to complete. Then my 17 year old son walks in the room and asks who it’s for, I say Billy’s birthday. So my son proceeds to tell me Billy is too old for a dinosaur and I should think about a trip to ToysR Us. I was heartbroken.

Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Zoe is five and a half and 100% into animals. she would love that. She loves animals more than human dolls.

We were at a birthday party Saturday for a five year old and I missed the gift unwrapping. We got him “Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed” by Mo Willems (any Mo Willems book is a winner) and a Muno guitar (Muno is a character on “Yo Gabba Gabba”). The toys that kids this age played with at the party were swords, Nerf guns, Transformers (although my kids don’t like the Transformers so much), and play sets like the Imaginext castle. Zoe is into Littlest Pet Shop and the Wolverine cartoon on TV. Holden is into Star Wars (classic, tyvm) and any mode of transport (spaceships, trains, cars, school buses, etc.).

Some toys are timeless and ageless. Play Doh. Crayola. Books. If you’re not sure what to get a kid, I’d go with a big ol’ pack of Play Doh. ;)

  2. Thanks for the advice, Eden. I like the classic ideas. Wish me luck for shopping, I feel like I’ve entered cult territory when I go into Toys R Us.

  3. My daughter (she’s Zoe’s age) LOVES Ben 10-the toys are pretty damn cool, and the show is actually something I can get behind in terms of message.

She loves her realistic dinos, ANYTHING about bugs, science kits, books, oodles of books, and wants one of those hot wheels sets with the dinky cars.

TRS isn’t so bad this time of year. Be brave!

  4. WTF is Ben 10?
